MAD NEWS: FASHION, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT NEWS OF JANUARY

We are so excited to present a brand new series on our blog: the MAD NEWS. Every month, discover the news that made the buzz in fashion, art or entertainment, whether in Quebec or around the world. From Paris Fashion Week to the launch of the Bagel Dunk: here are the news for January 2023!

The death of Vivienne Westwood

This sad news was announced on December 30, but we think our dear Vivienne deserves her place in our news bulletin. Mrs. Westwood was an English artist and fashion designer, but also a fervent activist. She is best known for bringing the modern punk movement to fashion in the 70s and 80s, thanks to the SEX boutique she founded with her husband. Until her death, Vivienne created eccentric collections, sometimes provocative, but above all, admirable. Her work will continue to inspire many people and shake up codes, as she has always done so well.

The launch of the Montreal Bagel Dunk Low

To celebrate the famous Montreal bagel, Nike has created a shoe to honor it. Adorned with sesame seed-shaped spots and blue lines, the shoe was unveiled at the Off The Hook store on January 13, 2023. Afterwards, they went on sale on the SNKRS site, but they are already sold out ! If you were lucky enough to get one, you will notice that the box that accompanies these Dunks was illustrated by Montreal artist Chien Champion.

MRKNTN’s collection at the men’s PFW

As you probably already know, Paris Men’s Fashion Week took place from January 17 to 22, 2023. For the very first time, Markantoine, the Quebec designer behind the MRKNTN brand, presented his fall winter 2023 collection in Paris. Named The Fool, the name of the collection refers to the tarot card of the Fool, associated with the beginning, recklessness and the unknown. It is very rare for designers from here to travel to Paris to show their creations. This is therefore a very important step for MRKNTN and great visibility for Montreal fashion!

The Schiaparelli scandal

Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week took place from January 23 to 26 and it was Schiaparelli who got the ball rolling. Known for his spectacular creations, Daniel Roseberry, the artistic director of the house, presented a collection that did not please everyone. Named Inferno, after Dante’s “The Divine Comedy”, the collection featured certain dresses featuring the heads of animals such as a lion, a leopard and a she-wolf. Despite the very realistic effect, these heads were fake and sculpted by hand, in wax.

Some critics claim that the dresses glorify hunting trophies, while others believe that they could, on the contrary, open the discussion on this subject. Other than that, the rest of the collection was very well received and the public still highlights Schiaparelli’s incredible craftsmanship, which is why Haute Couture Fashion Week exists.

Yayoi Kusama in the window of Louis Vuitton in New York

You probably saw this video a million times on Instagram or even TikTok, because it was really everywhere! While Louis Vuitton announced its collaboration with Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama at the beginning of January, it was rather one of its stores in New York that was making the buzz. It is in the heart of Manhattan, in the window of the Louis Vuitton store, that a hyper-realistic robot has been created in the image of the artist. The artist stares at passers-by while painting her famous dots on the window. The luxury brand has also produced other facades and windows in her honor, all over the world. Impressive !

MAD Collectif offices in Dezeen magazine

In 2022, we changed our identity, but also our offices. It was the Montreal architecture firm Ivy Studio that transformed a former printing press into offices and creative spaces, with a “work in progress” aesthetic and a few touches of color.

Their creation was published in Dezeen, a renowned architecture and design magazine with a huge influence in the world. It is an honor for the entire MAD Collectif team !

The Glitch 3 event in Montreal

On January 25, 2023, The Glitch 3 took place in partnership with MAD Collectif. This series of events aims to promote artists, performers and designers from Montreal, in a festive and fun atmosphere! Here are some pictures of this memorable evening.
